Project report

The Radisson Hotel, located opposite to the Millennium-Dome, was built in 2006 in the new centre of Canary Wharf. The approx. 3,000 m² roof on top of the 10th floor of the Radisson Hotel received an extensive green roof. Because the building is located directly by the River Thames and is surrounded by high buildings the Radisson Hotel is exposed to strong winds. Therefore it was decided to plant the roof partially with pre-cultivated vegetation mats. Between the vegetation mats and the roof edge is an approx. 2 m wide gravel strip where the rails for the window cleaning system are placed. The centre of the roof area was planted according to the plant list “Rockery Type Plants”. The drainage and water storage element Floradrain® FD 25-E was used for the build-up of the roof garden.

  • Extensive green roof in full flower
The green roof is visible from many surrounding taller buildings.
  • Bird's eye view onto the green roof of a tall building
Due to high wind load parts of the roof were planted with pre-cultivated vegetation mats
  • Green roof in the city
The rails for the window cleaning system are placed on a gravel strip surrounding the green roof.
