Gallie Craig Coffee House, Scotland

Gallie Craig Coffee House is situated on the Southern tip of the Scottish Peninsula “Rhins of Galloway” – the most southerly point of Scotland. Set on vertical cliffs and embedded into the surrounding landscape that it is almost invisible, Gallie Craig offers spectacular views across the Irish Sea. Due to its exposed location in a nature reserve, an environmentally-sound building concept was required for this project to obtain building permission. The target was to fit the building into the landscape in an environmentally-sensitive manner. So a turf roof was planned growing the same grasses as in the surrounding landscape. For this a build-up system including ZinCo Floradrain® FD 40-E drainage board as a core element was installed in combination with a special blend of substrate that suited the needs of the turf planted. In the end, an extraordinary level of harmony with the surrounding grassland was achieved.
