Furniture factory in the Norwegian woods

Yet again, thinking outside the box has produced a new reality the like of which has never been seen before. Visionary architects, the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), are no strangers to this. BIG has designed the most environmentally friendly and transparent furniture factory in the world for furniture manufacturers, Vestre AS, that is at the same time a tourist destination and an experience centre for all visitors. That is truly unique!

Sustainability and ecology are becoming increasingly important in modern architecture. At the same time, urban planning solutions are urgently required to counteract the consequences of climate change such as heavy rainfall events and overheating of cities. This means that designers and architects will have to focus even more on roofs and podium decks with regard to rainwater management.

The conservation and recreation of biodiversity in nature, is one of the major objectives of a future-oriented, ecological and sustainable environmental policy. That’s why biodiverse green roofs nowadays become more frequently specified in urban planning as they are able to provide replacement habitats for flora and fauna which have been lost to building development and sealed ground. The Environment Act became law in Nov, 2021 and the new Biodiversity Net Gain Regulations should come into force during 2023 at the latest.

Valletta Design Cluster, Malta

950 trees, shrubs, ground cover plants, climbing plants, flowers and grasses across a roof area of 495 m² on a 400-year-old building – the design of the roof garden on the Valletta Design Cluster is as rich in detail and artistic as the entire infrastructure project in Valletta, Malta’s city of culture.

Urban Farming in Toronto

“Fresh ingredients taste better” is the guiding principle of the farm to table movement and nothing could be more natural than using your own roof for growing herbs, vegetables or even hops. The Avling Kitchen and Brewery in Toronto has proven this with their 400 m² roof garden that supplies all kinds of ingredients for their own brewery and restaurant.

The huge mixed-use development at Wimbledon Grounds including vast 15,967 sqm area of “blue” roofs and “blue” podiums is one of the largest blue roofing projects in the UK. The key feature of these blue/green roofs is the ZinCo system build-up “Stormwater Management Roof” which can not only store large volumes of rainwater and release them again over predetermined periods but also reduces the urban heat island effect by the huge amount of greened areas.
Trees are increasingly used as an architectural design feature in the landscaping of roofs and podium decks. The selection of suitable tree species, adequate roof substrate and, above all, the local site conditions with regard to wind pressure and wind suction are essential. Steel grids are often used to anchor trees on rooftops by securing the root balls to the grid with tension straps. However, the sharp edges of these steel grids can damage the waterproofing. This can be avoided by using the new ZinCo Robafix® tree anchorage system.

Sustainability Assessment

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) has been created as an instrument which reliably shows the environmental impact of construction products throughout their complete life cycle and describes their functional and technical properties.

Roof terrace flooring on pedestals

Pedestals are perfect for roof walkway and terrace floorings. The reason is that roofs often do not have the load-bearing capacity to carry the weight of the base layer, the bedding material and the flooring, and the material is also awkward to transport and distribute with this design. On the other hand, it is easy to use the well-known ZinCo Elefeet® pedestals that are now being launched on the market in a new and expanded version that includes a rail system.

Parisian roof terrace at the Pavillon d’Armenonville

The Pavillon d’Armenonville in Paris offers an exceptional and prestigious backdrop for corporate and private events. The architecturally appealing building hosts guests in six lounges and in a stylish 515 m² roof garden. A host of different vegetables, herbs and edible flowers are grown there in 26 plant beds in which the ZinCo system build-up “Urban Farming” has been installed.
